Constipation is caused by your body having trouble moving your stool through your digestive tract. Constipation is caused predominantly due to waste moving through the digestive tract too slowly. One of the main jobs of the large intestine (colon) is to re-absorb water from the stool. When stool moves too slowly through the colon, lots of water is re-absorbed, making your stool hard and more difficult to pass. A variety of things can cause this slowing of your bowel movement.
